Women in the workforce. A movie review..The Typewriter in the Twentieth Century

Author, Dennis Brock blogging

I recently watched a four minute long video on a favorite subject of mine-the manual typewriter. Entitled "The Typewriter in the Twentieth Century".

This thoughtful and well produced video begins with ever effervescent "The Typewriter Song". I grew up watching Jerry Lewis's pantomime of this song and today you can watch the Bradenburg Symphony perform it complete with a typewriter percussionist in white tie and tails. We are then offered the historical insight that the typewriter was instrumental to helping woman get out of the house and into the workplace a century ago.

The video continues with a series of interviews with everyone from the repairman who suddenly finds himself fully employed to a famous collector(Steve Soboroff)who finds and covets the typewriters of the famous like Hemmingway and John Lennon.I wouldn't mind owning any one of these, but John Lennon?Cool!

We meet a lovely artist named Louise L.A. Marler whose images of antique typewriters attract attention and sales. No one ever kept a computer on their desk because its beautiful-not so with these soulful and sexy machines.

We hear the name Tom Hanks whose wife must surely be as patient as mine as I bet you he owns more machines than he admits to.Tom is the Moses of manuals attempting to free these wonderful machines from their attics, basements and garages. After all ,they come from a time of putting pride before price and as such, will never be made again.

We here the name Larry Mc Multry,a Pulitzer winner who recently auctioned off two of his many typewriters for almost$40K.I guess someone truly believed in residual magic to shell out that kind of green. We even meet a millennial who senses the magical connection-the feeling that there is something indescribable about them-some mystical connection She got it,as does Tom Hanks ;and myself.

Its something you have to experience in three dimensions with all the senses alert. There are uses for these marvelous and majestic machines that we have yet to explore and there is something magical about them. This video expresses it well.
